Matthews Arena Improved

I love seeing hockey in old, historic barns.  None are older than Northeastern’s Matthews Arena, a rink that predates both Boston Garden and Fenway Park and is the original home of the Bruins, Celtics, and Whalers (cue Brass Bonanza).  There is perhaps no better place to watch hockey than front row balcony at Matthews, where you find yourself hanging directly over the ice.

With the recent success of the Husky team on the ice, it’s nice to see the school looking to improve the home of the program while maintaining the historic feel of the place.  Here’s a link to a video the school put out showing some historical images plus artist renderings of the improvements and there’s also some images of the renovations, including the new center ice scoreboard, as well.  It’s interesting to see in that video that there were once windows along the sides.

Looking forward to seeing the new and improved Matthews when the Minutemen visit in early January.
