Report: John Micheletto To Be Named UMass Coach

Matt Vautour of the Gazette is reporting that Vermont Associate Head Coach John Micheletto will be named head hockey coach at Massachusetts, replacing Toot Cahoon.  Though he interviewed with Athletic Director John McCutcheon this past week, Micheletto is a bit of a surprise as most people thought the job would be offered to UNH assistant Scott Borek.

Micheletto has been an assistant at Vermont for the past nine years.  Prior to that he was an assistant at Notre Dame and Union.  He has also been actively involved in USA Hockey.  He played hockey for Dartmouth.

He has the reputation of a great recruiter, but hasn’t been behind the bench as a head coach since prep school.

Here’s his bio from UVM as well as his profile from HockeyDB.

Good guy for sure but N-O-T the answer at UMASS who were right on the fence in a bunch of 1 goal games last year. Had the chance to hire 2 of Hockey East’s TOP assistants and arguably the AD didn’t interview 2 of the most tenured (Bavis or Cavanaigh) who come from winning programs, the best programs. The assistants the AD could’ve hired would’ve come from BC, BU or UNH which are the top 3 HE programs!!!!

If he wins this will be a good hire, but I feel that McCutcheon was looking for a yes man that is willing to play 65th fiddle behind all the women’s sports.

  5. Some philosopher once said, “greatness gives rise to greatness.” How can we expect anything other than the status quo now that an average coach has been selected? He is a great human being, I mean GREAT. However, the other guys have consistently seen the masters work. With all due respect to Kevin Sneddon, this ain’t the answer.

Fellas – If this is true, I am really bummed. I agree with Puck Pagan, yes man who doesnt mind being behind womens frisbee.

    • So do we get to find out who 1999 Minuteman is when the coach is named, as promised?

I’d like to go in a positive direction now, if this announcement is really true. This is a new beginning. I don’t think anyone REALLY knows this guy. So before you say he’s a “yes” man, give him a chance. WhIle we’ve seen some middle of the road guys turn down the job, let’s make a go of it with someone who actually wants it. The current players deserve a new start after the last 5-6 yrs of mediocrity, despite having very, very good players. Maybe a fresh outlook can jumpstart the program.
