Polls & Awards

So this first Polls & Awards post of the season can pretty much be titled “Why Polls Are Stupid”.  Last week UMass had enough votes in the USCHO poll to be de facto 28th and ahead of fellow Hockey East teams Northeastern and Providence.  In this week’s poll UMass received zero votes, no doubt because of their lackluster performance this past weekend against…er…UMass.  Providence and Northeastern played as many real games as UMass this past week, zero, yet still received votes.  Just another lesson that the polls are only as valuable as the people that are chosen to vote in them.

We have a split poll this week as Boston College is #1 for USCHO but Minnesota is tops in the USA Hockey/USA Today poll.

All Black Bears and Warriors in this week’s Hockey East awards, since they’re the only ones who played.

UMass is flip-flopping a home and home with Providence in January.  The teams will play at the Mullins on Friday, January 11th and then at Schneider the next night.

New England Hockey Journal has their preview of Hockey East.  They also have this in-depth feature on Jerry York, claiming he’s the best coach in college hockey.  Yes, yes he is.

Starting to wrap-up preview mode here at FTT.  Tomorrow I’ll unveil my pick for Newcomer of the Year, Wednesday will be the annual way too long season preview for the Minutemen, and then Thursday will take a look at Friday’s opener against the UConn Huskies.

Hey umass AD , what was umass football final , good going with moving the games, now he gets a hockey coach who can’t pick captains , then again he was the forth or fifth pick anyway .. Hockey team show them how it can be done with no help , good luck , maybe the AD gets fired next year

Yeah, Micheletto should just blindly pick a couple of seniors before he sees anyone skate or sees how they act on the ice.

Every UMass player already knows who the leaders are in the dressing room. Beyond that, it doesn’t matter.

Captains don’t have to be Seniors and the team votes too!

Seriously, who gives a shit who the captains are.

There are juniors and seniors who are leaders, I am sure the players dont have a problem with it, I dont know why anyone on here does. He will name them when he figures it out, probably this week. Its just a letter on a jersey. Not gonna affect the outcome of the games.

    • Agreed. Not sure why people are making a big deal of captains. This is a close team who is officially named captain won’t do anything to change that.

Players really seem to be buying into Michs program so far, that was kind of lacking the last few years under toot. Not saying he was a bad guy, I liked him, just dont think the kids had confidence in his strategies and grew very frustrated with him changing lines every week as your saw from the comments after he stepped down. Really excited how close this team seems and hopefully it benefits them going forward.

Players have no choice ,, line changes were an issue , but captains are important , how many good teams have bad captains ? they are a close team and we can credit that to the AD , who else did they have but each other , GO UMASS , look forward to game 1

No idea why I am arguing this, but how is being a close team a credit to the AD? Wouldnt that be a credit to the players themselves?

This captains argument is just silly. I am sure 3 captains will be named this week and will all be worthy of it. How often did you worry about who the captains were over the last four years, except when they were named? You say congrats to those players and move on.

I think umass has bigger problems then just captains. I dont know if you were at that scrimmage but they looked awful. Five on five was gross. The power play looked awful. The goalies were giving up soft goals. I think this could be a long year for the minuteman if they dont right the ship quickly. Sure you can slip by uconn but when bc bu and unh come you better be ready. I was not overly impressed by the way the lines were set up. The freshman were not impressive at all. I think that kid TJ is overrated. I just hope umass is ready for uconn on friday

Tell us how you really feel.

THE SKY IS FALLING! THEY LOOKED BAD DURING AN INTER-SQUAD SCRIMMAGE!

    NO CAPTAINS! THE FRESHMEN STINK!

    Settle down.

  13. No offense, but people need to chill out. No need to write off the season because the coach hasn’t named captains yet or the team looked rusty in a scrimmage.
