Recruit Update: Pelton-Byce, Leonard Lead Teams To Tournament Titles

This is a long overdue look at how the future Minutemen have fared lately as holiday schedules and mid-week games haven’t allowed for one in recent weeks.  Gone from the recruit list is Brandon Montour who has made his UMass debut and has two assists in his three games as a Minuteman.  Added to the list are Nic Renyard and Ivan Chukarov who verbally committed to Coach Micheletto’s program earlier in the month.

Brandon Egli – D – Vernon Vipers (BCHL) – 2015
26 GP / 0 G /6 A /6 Pts / 21 PIM
Egli had one assist in his last six games.

Jake McCarthy – D – South Shore Kings (USPHL) – 2015 or 2016
3 GP / 0 G /1 A / 1 Pts / 9 PIM
After recovering from an injury for the entire fall, McCarthy finally made his debut for the Kings in the last few weeks.  He has an assist through three games for the Kings.

Kurt Keats – C – Powell River Kings (BCHL) – 2015
31 GP / 24 G / 17 A / 41 Pts / 49 PIM
Keats has two goals and an assist in his last three games.  He has fallen somewhat in the league leader categories, but that’s because he missed some games representing Team Canada West in the World Junior A Challenge.  Here’s a good article chronicling Keats’ time with Team Canada West.

Austin Plevy – C – Brooks Bandits (AJHL) – 2015
37 GP / 21 G /38 A / 59 Pts / 54PIM
Plevy has one goal and seven assists in his last six games.  Plevy leads the AJHL in points and is 3rd in goals.

Nic Renyard – G – Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) – 2015
19-5-2 / .926 save % / 2.10 GAA / 3 shutouts
Renyard is tied for the league lead in wins, is 3rd in save percentage, and 4th in goals against average.  He’s also tied for 4th in shutouts.

Ivan Chukarov – D – Minnesota Wilderness (NAHL) – 2015
25 GP / 6 G /15 A / 21 Pts / 27 PIM / +15
Chukarov’s 21 points are tied for 6th best among defensemen in the NAHL.  He had three assists in his most recent game, an 8-2 win over the Soo.

Shane Bear – D – Brooks Bandits (AJHL) – 2016
38 GP / 4 G / 21 A / 25 Pts / 39 PIM
Bear has kicked it into another gear since we last checked in with him.  In his last six games he has 3 goals and 5 assists.

Troy Conzo – RW – Wenatchee Wild (NAHL) – 2016 or 2017
3 GP / 0 G / 0 A /0 Pts / 0 PIM / –2  Des Moines (USHL)
18 GP/ 2 G/ 2 A / 4 Pts / 4 PIM / -2 Wenatchee (NAHL)
Conzo was held scoreless in his last five games.

Kyler Nachtigall – LW – Brooks Bandits (AJHL) – 2016
38 GP / 11 G / 7 A / 18 Pts / 43 PIM
Nachtigall had a couple goals and an assist in his last three games.

Ty Pelton-Byce – C – Team Wisconsin U18 (Elite)/Madison Memorial (WI HS) – 2016
21 GP / 12 G / 12 A / 24 Pts / 8 PIM  Team Wisconsin U18
13 GP /18 G / 14 A /32 Pts  Madison Memorial
Pelton-Byce has an astounding 18 goals and 32 points in 13 games for Madison Memorial.  He just led his team to a Culver’s Cup win, scoring two goals in the 3-1 championship game.

John Leonard – F – Springfield Rifles (Mass Selects)/Springfield Cathedral (MA HS) – 2017
14 GP / 21 G / 11 A / 32 Pts  Springfield Rifles
6 GP / 12 G / 6 A /18 Pts  Springfield Cathedral
UMass’ other big prep recruit is doing pretty well too as Leonard is averaging two goals a game early in the Mass High School hockey season.  Jeff Cox has a scouting report on Leonard and the other players at the Pete Frates Winter Classic from this past weekend.  Here are some highlights as Leonard help lead Cathedral to the championship of the tournament:

No surprise that Frank Vatrano was named to the All-Tournament team for his two goals and two assists at the Catamount Cup this past weekend.

USCHO has a great story that I also wrote about recently too of UMass grad Anthony Raiola being involvement with BOKS, a local charity aimed at physical fitness for kids.
