The Massachusetts hockey program picked up a commitment today from 5’9”, 187 pound forward Ryan Badger. Over The Boards was the first to have the news:
Badger has already turned 21 years old so it’s pretty safe to say he’ll be coming to Amherst this fall. UMass still has some spots to fill for the upcoming recruiting class, so this will help fill at least one of those voids. Badger originally committed to Maine way back in 2011 when Tim Whitehead was still coaching in Orono. However, last summer he reopened his recruiting. He’ll join Joe Widmar as a former Maine recruit who also switched his commitment to coach John Micheletto and his staff.
The Hainsport, NJ native has spent the last two seasons with the Flyers of the USPHL where he’s had 121 points, including 41 goals, in 91 games. Badger has been captain of the Flyers for the last two years. Here’s the Flyers’ release on his commitment.
Here are some highlights. First is a double overtime winner from the most recent USPHL playoffs while the second is a shootout winner from last season.

/ April 13, 2015Welcome aboard to Ryan and it surely looks like this guy know how to score. But it drives me crazy to see guys this old coming in as freshman. My son was born in 1994 and he will be a junior in college next year. The system is ridiculous. This guy will be 25 when/if he graduates from UMass.

/ April 13, 2015It is what it is at this point. I don’t know if there really is a way to change the system right now. Recruiting in college hockey is in a really strange place right now between the gentleman’s agreement being dead, overage players, major junior poaching, etc.

/ April 14, 2015#ALLRIGHT= We are a mess, but these last minute recruits should save my job until next spring. Then it will be #FIRED, I wonder if his buddy will retweet that one, or will he be #FIRED too?
