With 26 days until UMass’ exhibition game against the Dalhousie Tigers we take a look at the newcomer who will be wearing #26 next season. Forward Joseph Widmar originally committed to Maine but ended up rethinking his choice last fall. By January he had decided to play for Coach Micheletto and his staff at the University of Massachusetts.
Widmar combines a big physical presence on the ice (he’s listed at 6’, 211 lbs) and a good shot. Last season he was one of the top offensive players for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL, scoring 19 goals and collecting 22 assists in 60 games. Given his size Widmar should help the Minutemen’s play along the boards. One would think he’d play a similar role to that of Troy Power in the last couple seasons.

Northeastern’s WRBB has the first UMass team preview of the season. Unfortunately the missed the fact that Frank Vatrano and Brandon Montour left school after last year so their conclusions are a little skewed.
Note: WRBB has since changed their preview to reflect the early departures
