Another weekend without gaining any points has put the Massachusetts hockey team in a precarious position with just a few weeks left in the season. It also sets up an interesting matchup this weekend as the Maine Black Bears come to town currently inhabiting last place, but are just two points behind the Minutemen.

Weekend Wrap-around ▲ Northeastern Surging
We had nothing but conference play for the Hockey East teams this past weekend. Yes, the stretch run has come to the league. Of the six weekend series, four ended up being sweeps. The weekend helped cement the gap between the four or five teams with a chance at the league title and everyone else.

Weekend Wrap-around ▲ Grzelcyk’s Performance Versus UMass Earns Him Hockey East Honors
It’s not a big surprise that Boston University defenseman Matt Grzelcyk was named the Hockey East Player of the Week after scoring a natural hat trick against the Minutemen just two days following scoring a goal in BU’s crazy comeback against Harvard. UMass’ opponent in goal this weekend, former Minuteman Kevin Boyle, was named co-Defensive Player of the Week after picking up his fifth shutout of the season against UNH.

Weekend Wrap-Around ▲ UMass Heads Into Break Tied For 7th In Hockey East
There were only two Hockey East games on the schedule this past weekend as most of the league’s teams played against non-conference opponents as the Massachusetts hockey did or were idle. But the two league games there were ended up being pretty entertaining and and perhaps a little surprising.

Weekend Wrap-Around ▲ Lagesson Named To Sweden’s Preliminary World Junior Roster
Before jumping into the usual recap of the weekend that was, the big news today was that UMass defenseman William Lagesson was named to the preliminary World Junior Championship roster for his native Sweden. This isn’t a big surprise since he played for the Swedish junior team last winter. The last Minuteman to play in the World Junior Championships was Stephen Werner in 2004.

Weekend Wrap-Around ▲ Lowell Ahead Of The Pack In Hockey East Standings
It’s still early in the 2015-16 season but the Lowell River Hawks are already starting to put some separation between them and the rest of Hockey East in the league standings. Lowell played a league game across the pond in Belfast this past week against Northeastern and secured a win thanks to a tying goal in the final seconds and overtime winner. The victory gave the Hawks 15 league points, 5 points more than second place Boston College, though the Eagles have played four less games.

Weekend Wrap-Around ▲ Hockey East Claims Three Of Top Four Spots In Rankings

The latest USCHO polls has Providence continuing its reign as the #1 team in the country with Boston College just behind them at #2. Lowell moved up to #4 after taking three points from Notre Dame. Staying at #3 is UMass’ next opponent, 11-0-2 Quinnpiac.

Weekend Wrap-around ▲ Ties Abound As Hockey East Play Begins
League play for Hockey East opened up this past weekend and half of the six games played ended in ties. Of course the Massachusetts Minutemen had the dramatic five-goal comeback to tie New Hampshire at the Mullins Center on Friday. Bragging rights are still up for grabs in the Merrimack Valley as Lowell and Merrimack fought to a couple 1-1 ties in a home and home this past weekend. Boston University was the only team to grab a league win with their 4-2 victory over UConn and sit alone in first place currently.

Weekend Wrap-around ▲ Plevy Named Hockey East Co-Rookie Of The Week
For his role in helping the Massachusetts hockey program gain an opening weekend sweep in Colorado Springs Minuteman freshman Austin Plevy was named Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week today. He shares the honor with UConn’s Max Letunov who, like Plevy, also had a hat trick in his collegiate debut. In addition to the 3 goals and one assist in Friday night’s 6-3 win Plevy also scored the game-winner on Saturday. Plevy and Mercyhurt’s Taylor Best, who has played one more game than Plevy, are tied for the national lead in goals. Shane Walsh (3G, 2A) and Nic Renyard (45 saves) were named Top Performers by the league this week for their efforts this weekend.
