It wasn’t pretty but the Massachusetts hockey team got the monkey off their back and picked up their first win in the last 10 games with a 4-3 victory over AIC at the MassMutual Center in Springfield on Tuesday. It was a bit of a back and forth affair with the Yellow Jackets jumping out to a 1-0 lead and UMass scoring three quick goals to bring a two goal lead into the third period. But AIC would mount a comeback and send the game to overtime tied at three apiece. Ultimately it would be senior Ben Gallacher scoring his first goal since December of 2014 in the extra frame to get UMass its 8th win of the season.

Recap ▲ Dismal Start Dooms Minutemen In 6-3 Loss to #9 BU
The Massachusetts Minutemen were looking to put together a much better result against the 9th ranked Boston University Terriers than when the teams first met last month. In that game UMass hung tough with the Terriers for half the game before being overwhelmed by BU’s superior skill, losing 7-2. The Minutemen were not in last night’s game nearly as long as BU scored in the opening minute and built a three goal lead by the five minute mark, ultimately winning 6-3.

Recap ▲ Boston College Blitzes UMass 7-0
Boston College 7. Massachusetts 0.
These blowouts were supposed to be a thing of the past. Over the summer Massachusetts hockey coach John Micheletto re-tooled his defense, bringing in four players who are either already drafted, attended an NHL prospect camp this summer, or are projected to be drafted next June. Or some combination of all three. In net, Micheletto finally landed the high profile goaltender he’s been coveting, with the top Junior A player in all of Canada landing in Amherst during the offseason. Yet, here we are a month into the season and UMass finds itself 56th in the country in goals against after giving up 23 goals in the last 4 games. They are also 56th in penalty kill with opponents scoring a third of the time on the power play. Players leave. New players come in. But the program continues to be dogged by major defensive deficiencies.

View From Section U ▲ UMass Freshmen By The Numbers
The Massachusetts hockey team has a very large, hopefully talented freshman class this year that could be the key to turning around the team’s fortunes on the ice. Regular FTT readers have become acquainted with them through the regular Recruit Update posts and the recent player features as we count down to the Dalhousie game. But each year I like to run down each freshman and compare their numbers against other recent Minutemen who have come out of the same junior leagues to see how they stack up.

Countdown: 26 Days ‘Til Dalhousie
With 26 days until UMass’ exhibition game against the Dalhousie Tigers we take a look at the newcomer who will be wearing #26 next season. Forward Joseph Widmar originally committed to Maine but ended up rethinking his choice last fall. By January he had decided to play for Coach Micheletto and his staff at the University of Massachusetts.
