There hasn’t been a lot of coaching search news in recent days. But a lot of the future Minutemen are still in action. So let’s catch up with them.

In my last recruit update I passed along the news that recruits Cale Makar and Matt Murray were named award winners for the AJHL. Well recently the Brooks Bandits held an on-ice ceremony to announce their team awards and a couple of Minutebandits were winners. Cale Makar was named co-Rookie of the Year while Shane Bear won Defenseman of the year. You can view the ceremony here.

The regular season is starting to wrap up for the UMass committed players just as it is for the college teams. And with the final regular season games comes recognition. A couple future Minutemen were honored by the AJHL this past week. Brooks defenseman Cale Markar was named AJHL Rookie of the Year while UMass’ newest commitment, goalie Matt Murray, was named AJHL Top Goaltender. Last season Nic Renyard won Top Goaltender as well as league MVP, beating out current teammate Austin Plevy who was the AJHL’s top scorer. Shane Bear was a finalist for Defenseman of the Year but lost out to Brinson Pasichnuk, an Arizona State recruit.

High school and prep hockey is starting up in New England so that means recruits Brian Scoville and Colin Felix are in action with their teams soon after spending the fall playing short season juniors.

Time to take a look at the future Minutemen. Kyler Nachtigall, Troy Conzo, and Shane Bear each had multiple point weeks north of the border while Ty Pelton-Byce and John Leonard scored goals in the USHL this week.

Happy Tuesday. Time to take a look at how the future Minutemen are faring. Before we do that though there was some news today concerning a current player and a recruit. NHL Central Scouting released their preliminary Players To Watch for the upcoming season and freshman defenseman Carmine Buono and forward recruit and Amherst native John Leonard made the list. They’re both listed as “C” prospects, meaning it’s projected they’d be picked in the later rounds.

The countdown until Massachusetts hockey’s exhibition game against CIS Dalhousie is at 32 days today. That means it’s time to take a look at #32 for the Minutemen, sophomore goaltender Henry Dill.

The NHL Draft takes place this weekend in Sunrise, Florida and there’s a very good chance that at least one current UMass recruit will hear his name called. The first round takes place on Friday at 7pm (broadcast on NBC Sports), but any future Minuteman would likely be picked in rounds 2 through 7 which kick off Saturday at 10am (on NHL Network). Any recruit that gets picked this weekend will join senior Ben Gallacher (Florida, 4th round 2010) and incoming freshman William Lagesson (Edmonton, 4th round 2014) as draft picks associated with the UMass program.

It’s been a little while so time to see how the recruits who are still playing are doing. It’s very likely that we’ll see a few more recruits join this list in the coming months. The team is losing 5 forwards, 3 defensemen and a goalie to graduation or early departure but only have 3 forwards, 2 or 3 defensemen (depending on when McCarthy arrives), and a goaltender line up for next fall currently. So very likely that we could see a couple more forwards and maybe a defenseman added to next year’s incoming class.
