We’re still a few weeks away from UMass taking the ice for their first game, but the season has already started for some of the future Minutemen. So let’s take our first look at where the current recruits are playing this season and how they’ve done so far.

Yet another member of the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits has committed to join the Massachusetts hockey program once their junior career is finished. Defenseman Cale Makar is the latest Bandit to commit to John Micheletto and his staff, due to arrive in Amherst in the fall of 2017. Current Minutemen Maddison Smiley and Patrick Lee, incoming freshman Austin Plevy, and current Bandits Shane Bear and Kyler Nachtigall are the Brooks players who previously signed up to play at UMass in recent years.

I’ve been busy the last few weeks with work (bad) and vacation (very good) so time to catch up on the news around the Massachusetts hockey program since my last post.
Of course the biggest news, at least in this area, was former Minuteman defenseman Matt Irwin signing with a one year deal with the Boston Bruins. Irwin will become the first UMass hockey player to suit up the Bruins, assuming Frank Vatrano doesn’t somehow beat him onto the Garden ice first.

It may be July but Coach Micheletto and his staff are still on the road trying to improve the fortunes of the Massachusetts hockey team. They’re doing so not just for future years, but this coming year as well. UMass picked up a commitment from 6’2”, 185lb defenseman Callum Fryer for this fall. The news was first reported by Over The Boards:

The Massachusetts hockey program picked up a commitment tonight from 6’1”, 175lb defenseman Colin Felix. Felix is a ‘99 birth year so he’d likely arrive in Amherst in 2018, joining fellow defenseman Brian Scoville as the second commitment for that fall.

The USHL, the premier junior hockey league in the United States, held its draft the last two days and a few future Minutemen were selected. Yesterday was the Phase I draft for just 1999 birth years. Brian Scoville, due at UMass in 2018, was taken in the 7th Round (105th overall) by the Sioux Falls Stampede. In today’s Phase II draft for all draft eligible age groups a couple recruits were picked early by the Omaha Lancers. First was Nick Jenny (2017) was taken in the 1st round (11th overall) and then the Lancers took Jake Massie (2016) in the 2nd round (27th overall). Later in the draft Justin Dixson (2017) was taken by the Tri-City Storm in the 8th round (129th overall).
Now onto the regular updates, with news about Austin Plevy, Nic Renyard, Ivan Chukarov, Justin Dixson, and John Leonard.

The Massachusetts hockey team held its banquet this past Saturday where sophomore forward Steven Iacobellis was named captain for the 2015-16 season. I can’t speak for his leadership in the locker room, but there’s no double he has been impactful when he’s been on the ice. This past season the team was undefeated in games where he scored a goal. He missed a couple games due to injury and I felt his absence as a playmaker was very noticeable. I personally named him as my Underrated Player of the Year and I think Iacobellis has made a good case for this selection in his two years in the maroon and white.

The Massachusetts hockey program got it’s second commitment in two days. Yesterday it was forward Ryan Badger. Today it was defenseman Carmine Buono. Buono, a 1997 birth year, played this past season for Powell River of the BCHL where he was teammates with fellow UMass recruit Kurt Keats. He and Keats also played together for Canada West in the Junior B Challenge this past winter.
