So Long And Thanks For All The Sieves

A triangle is a geometric shape that Joe Mallen used prominently as he designed the Massachusetts hockey program’s uniforms when the team moved up to Division I in the 90s.  A triangle is also the Greek letter delta, which in math and science means “change”.  There has been a lot of changes, good and bad, to the UMass hockey program since I started Fear The Triangle seven years ago.  And there has been a lot of changes in my own life as well.  Previous change in my personal life forced me to take a season’s hiatus from writing about UMass hockey once.  And sure enough things keep changing and that continued change means Fear The Triangle is all done.  Again.  In the end, I just ran out of time.

Up To The Minute ▲ Assistant News; Recruit Update; State Of The Triangle

This will be a mixed bag of a post since there’s a few things to catch up on.  It makes sense to start off with this story that ran in the Collegian by Ross Gienieczko where he covers a lot of ground with Greg Carvel who has jumped into the everyday work of being the UMass hockey coach.  In the article Carvel talks about filling in his staff, Toot Cahoon, and the fate of committed recruits.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to Fear The Triangle.  My hope is that FTT becomes a place where UMass hockey fans can go to for up to date news and insight into what’s going on with their team.  I know some of you may have followed my posts on www.umasshoops.com, on this blog I hope to continue to share links and news relating to the team as well as keep track of committed and prospective recruits.  You’ll see recruit pages at the top of the page with some info.  I also hope to start posting some in depth game previews and recaps as well share my opinion on goings on in Hockey East and college hockey in general.

First and foremost this will be a fan’s perspective.  I do not work for UMass or any organization related to college or pro hockey.  Secondly, I can’t play hockey.  Never laced ’em up.  Sad, but true.  However I have been watching and learning while watching the maroon and white over these past 15 years plus, so I think I can add something.  But if you’re looking for a real technical analysis of the game of hockey, you’re in the wrong place.  But, if wondering what’s up with the Minutemen and what you can expect to see on the Mullins ice, then this is your place.

In addition to all that, I’ll probably be blogging about other topics as well.  I’m also a season ticket holder for UMass football and lacrosse and even get to a few hoops games so you’ll probably see random blogs about those teams as well (23 days until UMass vs KState if you were wondering).  On top of that you’ll probably see stuff about tailgating, quality beers, and whatever else happens to be on my mind from time to time as well.

As for the tone of this blog, I want this to be an informative place where people can come to find out the latest on their favorite team.   So while I’ve enjoyed a joke or two at the expense of our Hockey East brethren, I’m going to do my best to keep that off of here.  And while I hope readers use the comments section as a place for discussion, I also hope that they try to bring something to the table and stay on topic.  If you want to tell me that my team sucks, or UNH chokes, or Maine cheats, or BC has no fans, then head over to USCHO.  The link is just to your right.  But if you want to really discuss the UMass program or college hockey in general, I’d love to hear from you.

So that’s it.  It’s August and we still have a while until the season starts.  Players aren’t even on campus yet, so news is scarce.  I’m hoping an updated roster will show up soon on the UMass site or perhaps a news release about our incoming recruits.  But I’ll do my best to keep this place lively until then.

Go UMass!
