View From Balcony 322: Why Not Us? (Go Friars!)

On Thursday I was at the TD Garden with 18,000 other diehard college hockey fans from across the country to experience the wonderful event that is the Frozen Four.  If you haven’t attended a Frozen Four before, I highly recommend it.  As big as college hockey is in some of our lives it’s still has a relatively small hardcore following, so it’s a lot of fun to get all those fans together in one place at one time.  It’s interesting to see all the different jerseys and traditions of programs you don’t typically interact with much.

Report: Brandon Montour Leaves UMass, WIll Sign With Anaheim Ducks

Brandon Montour we hardly knew ye.  Montour’s career with Massachusetts hockey has come to an end after just one semester as he will sign with the team that made him a second round draft pick, the Anaheim Ducks.  He leaves after only 21 games with the Minutemen, but they were a productive 21.  Montour had 3 goals and 17 assists in his time in college and his 20 points were 4th best among all freshmen defenseman nationally despite playing in significantly less games.

Dainton Named HEA Defender Of The Week; Polls

Stopping 52 of 54 shots and gaining his second career shutout earned captain Paul Dainton the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Award.  Danny Hobbs, T.J. Syner, and Conor Sheary were all named Top Performers.

Boston College jumped up to the #2 team in the country with their weekend sweep, behind only Yale in the USCHO rankings.  Amazingly Merrimack dropped just one spot despite losing to Lowell on Friday.  Yale still has all the first place votes in the USA Hockey/USA Today poll.

Nothing too shocking in INCH’s Power Rankings.

The Collegian recapped the Minutemen’s weekend in Vermont.

A few alumni are making the news tonight.

ESPN Boston has a must read article on alum Scott Crowder and the Pond Hockey Championship tournament he has created.

The Bruins are out in L.A. tonight to take on Jon Quick and the Kings.

The Noble and Greenough prep hockey teams will wear special jerseys in their games this Saturday to benefit Peter Trovato’s Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund.

Hello and welcome to Fear The Triangle.  My hope is that FTT becomes a place where UMass hockey fans can go to for up to date news and insight into what’s going on with their team.  I know some of you may have followed my posts on, on this blog I hope to continue to share links and news relating to the team as well as keep track of committed and prospective recruits.  You’ll see recruit pages at the top of the page with some info.  I also hope to start posting some in depth game previews and recaps as well share my opinion on goings on in Hockey East and college hockey in general.

First and foremost this will be a fan’s perspective.  I do not work for UMass or any organization related to college or pro hockey.  Secondly, I can’t play hockey.  Never laced ’em up.  Sad, but true.  However I have been watching and learning while watching the maroon and white over these past 15 years plus, so I think I can add something.  But if you’re looking for a real technical analysis of the game of hockey, you’re in the wrong place.  But, if wondering what’s up with the Minutemen and what you can expect to see on the Mullins ice, then this is your place.

In addition to all that, I’ll probably be blogging about other topics as well.  I’m also a season ticket holder for UMass football and lacrosse and even get to a few hoops games so you’ll probably see random blogs about those teams as well (23 days until UMass vs KState if you were wondering).  On top of that you’ll probably see stuff about tailgating, quality beers, and whatever else happens to be on my mind from time to time as well.

As for the tone of this blog, I want this to be an informative place where people can come to find out the latest on their favorite team.   So while I’ve enjoyed a joke or two at the expense of our Hockey East brethren, I’m going to do my best to keep that off of here.  And while I hope readers use the comments section as a place for discussion, I also hope that they try to bring something to the table and stay on topic.  If you want to tell me that my team sucks, or UNH chokes, or Maine cheats, or BC has no fans, then head over to USCHO.  The link is just to your right.  But if you want to really discuss the UMass program or college hockey in general, I’d love to hear from you.

So that’s it.  It’s August and we still have a while until the season starts.  Players aren’t even on campus yet, so news is scarce.  I’m hoping an updated roster will show up soon on the UMass site or perhaps a news release about our incoming recruits.  But I’ll do my best to keep this place lively until then.

Go UMass!
